It sits next to your Nigerian licence and tells a traffic officer in another country, in their own language, that you are already cleared to drive. What an international driver's permit actually is
Think of the IDP as a small booklet that says the same thing in several languages.
Your Nigerian licence is written in English. A car hire desk in France or a checkpoint in Dubai may want that information in a form they can read fast. The IDP carries your name, your photo and the classes of vehicle you are allowed to drive, translated so nobody has to guess.
The classes part matters more than people realise. Your IDP only covers the vehicle categories your Nigerian licence already covers. If your home licence does not cover motorcycles, the permit will not magically add them. It copies what you have. It does not upgrade it.

In practice you bring a short stack of things. A valid Nigerian driver's licence. Passport photographs. A means of identity such as your international passport. And the application itself, processed through the recognised channel.
The detail that trips people up is consistency across documents. The name on your licence, your passport and your photographs should all match. A middle name that appears on one document but not another can stall the whole thing while someone tries to confirm you are the same person. Check the spellings before you submit, not after.

There is a second limit that catches people out. The permit cannot outlive the licence behind it. If your Nigerian licence expires in five months, the permit effectively expires then too, no matter what its own date says.
So before you travel, check both dates. A permit that lapses mid-trip is worse than no permit, because you planned around it. And because it is short-term, it is not the kind of document you sort once and forget. If you travel often, you renew it on a cycle, and you keep the licence under it current so there is always a valid base to build the permit from.
Common mistakes to skip
A few errors come up again and again.
Leaving it to the last week before a flight. Assuming the permit is a licence and turning up without the Nigerian one. Letting the home licence expire and only noticing at the counter. Carrying the IDP abroad but forgetting the actual licence, which makes the permit worthless.
Another one is buying a permit from a roadside fixer who promises it in an hour with no questions. A document that did not come through the recognised channel can fail you at the worst moment, when a foreign officer checks it and it does not hold up. The cheap shortcut becomes the expensive problem.
